eWaste Initiative
Join the eWaste initiative
Everyday thousands of computers are dumped in landfills around the world. Each one contains a variety of toxic wastes including, selenium, cadmium, mercury and cobalt. Over 200 tonnes of electronic waste is dumped in the Channel Islands alone each year and the eWaste initiative is iConsult’s attempt to reduce this amount and protect the environment.
Tony Moffa, iConsult’s Business Development director had the idea for the eWaste initiative after reading about the dangers that computer waste poses to the environment. With scores of highly toxic chemicals built into every computer as part of the manufacturing process, those that are not disposed of properly can leak toxic waste into the environment and cause a danger both to the environment and the food chain.
As part of iConsult’s work for its clients, it is often asked to dispose of perfectly serviceable, high specification computers which need replacing for business purposes but are in a good enough condition for schools and charitable organisations to use.
The eWaste initiative marries up this unwanted equipment with not for profit organisations that have an IT need but don’t have the budget. iConsult passes the computers on to the schools and charities after formatting them ready for use.
Although it is still in its first year, the eWaste initiative has already saved over 200 computers from the dump and passed them on to schools and charities. If your business would like to donate computers or you know of an organisation that could benefit from new IT equipment, please email the eWaste initiative at recycling@iconsultci.com.
